Architecture - Contemporary Vs Modern

Two words that you must have heard in terms of the architecture of the upcoming developments are - “modern” and “contemporary”.

While a lot of descriptions for various beautiful residences use these two words in their advertisements, a large mass of audience doesn’t really know what exactly do they mean and how they are different from each other. Even though the words are used on a regular basis and are thought of as the same, there are certain elements that differentiate them from each other.

Below are some details about the two that will help you better understand the terms “modern” and “contemporary”. Read on!

Basic difference
Simply, modern architecture is a type of style that was originated between the early years of the 1900s to 1950s and hasn’t changed for a long time. It is a much-defined style with minimal changes over time, hence when you claim a house to be built in “modern” style, however, it’s different in terms of architecture. Against this, pinpointing what exactly is “contemporary” is a challenging task, because the styles, fashions, and trends change so very quickly.

Summarizing it, modern architecture refers to a specific time period in the history of United States, whereas, contemporary architecture refers to the evolutionary and changing trends in the designs of a development.

Modern Architecture
Understanding the basic difference between the two – Modern designs were introduced, after a long period of highly decorated home designs which were more inclined towards the arrangement of the natural features of an area; but architects and even inhabitants chose to go against this tradition. Modern architects of that period designed and contractors built homes with open floor plans, asymmetry, and huge panels of windows.

This was completely against the tradition of building houses with fancy flare, built usually during those years. Modern architecture made an effort to create something simple that was highly functional and left out anything and everything which was unnecessary.

Also, advanced technology was also used with modern architecture. Modernists wanted to enable inhabitants to feel more connected to nature and hence they built homes that complimented the environment in and around it.

Contemporary Architecture
On one hand, where modern architecture finds connection with nature and simplicity, the contemporary architecture involves elements going on in the real-time or elements – which we call “trendy”. Architects and construction firms using contemporary style to design and build something ensure to make every detail of the development very innovative and advanced.

Contemporary designs are generally created incorporating various different styles and creating free-form lines and movements – all within the structure. The contemporary design started emerging in the 1970s, however, the style has changed a lot over time. This style of the architecture sticks with the time and the trends that are popular “now”, hence frequent changes can be seen. The craftsman-style architectures also keep up with large and open floor plans and interestingly this style is not dependent on a particular style.

Talking about the present times, the inclusion of high tech features and the demand for eco-friendly or green homes is also on the rise, which ultimately increases the demand for more energy-efficient measures and sustainability.

If you look around, there are a number of celebrated examples of modern as well as contemporary architecture. They both are unique yet eminent in their own style. Depending on the home-buyers’ interests and requirements, both the architectural styles are used largely all over.
