Moving towards water security – The need of the hour

Around 80% of the world’s population suffers a severe threat to its water security. 783 million people do not have access to clean and safe water worldwide out of which, 19% of world’s people without access to clean water live in India. Come summer and hue and cry above water availability becomes breaking news in Gurgaon. People become highly dependent on water tankers and illegal bore wells, exploiting groundwater tables that are already depleting at an alarming rate in the city.
Further, the effects of climate change on water availability has become more apparent in recent years. The rising mercury level and the water scarcity compound the hardship faced by Gurgaon citizenry. The city is growing by leaps and bounds and with fast pace urbanization, the importance of water as a scarce resource is gaining a strong foothold not only in the residential spaces but also in the commercial setups.
Founder, Elite Landbase, Navdeep JP Sardana says, “Water being a natural resource needs conservation and responsible consumption both in house and outdoors by all and sundry in any city of India. Gurgaon is home to more than 1.5 Million people. If all of us join hands to use water responsibly, we would soon be water secure.”

The fact to be taken note is that almost every living creature on the planet consumes water, however, the pressure is high on highly urbanized cities because of big commercial establishments and residential complexes which consume a million liters per day.  If we use water responsibly for drinking and washing purposes we will be able to conserve thousands of liters a day.
There are certain best practices already in the industry on water recycling, water reuse, rainwater harvesting systems, sensors, monitoring systems, etc. But more importantly, it is the behavioral change in citizens which is going to change the scenario.
